The Cosmic Treble Clef: A Black Hole Outburst Meets a Cluster Collision

X-ray and radio observations help reconstruct a vast structure’s possible history.

ADDED OCTOBER 28, 2026

A shape across the sky

A radio-emitting structure nicknamed the Treble Clef resembles the musical symbol. NASA’s October 15 report describes a possible explanation combining a supermassive black hole outburst with a later collision between two galaxy clusters.

Why combine observations?

Chandra’s X-ray observations contribute evidence about the surrounding environment, while radio observations reveal the striking structure. The published composite also includes infrared data. Comparing different wavelengths helps researchers test a history that no single image records directly.

Evidence versus reconstruction

The proposed sequence is an interpretation of observations, not footage of the eruption and collision taking place. “Likely caused” is more accurate than calling the history conclusively proved.

A name, not a sound

“Treble Clef” describes the appearance of the radio structure. The nickname does not mean the black hole played a musical note.
